Lesson · Your Shahadah
The testimony you carry every day.
What the shahadah is
The shahadah is the front door of Islam. Two short statements that summarise everything else.
If you said them with conviction, alhamdulillah — you are Muslim. If you have not yet, but you believe — say them now, with quiet certainty.
أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ
Ashhadu an lā ilāha illā-Allāh, wa-ashhadu anna Muḥammadan rasūl-Allāh.
“I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah.”
The Shahadah
The steps
5 steps, one at a time.
- 01
Hear it recited
Listen to it once, slowly, in Arabic. There are recordings on YouTube — search 'shahadah recitation'. Hear how it lands.
It is short. It is calm. It does not need ceremony to be true.
- 02
Say it aloud
أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ
Ashhadu an lā ilāha illā-Allāh
“I bear witness that there is no god but Allah.”
Say the first half slowly, in Arabic. Then in English. Both are accepted.
There is no god — none — except Allah. Sit with that.
- 03
Add the second half
وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ
Wa-ashhadu anna Muḥammadan rasūl-Allāh
“And I bear witness that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah.”
Muhammad ﷺ is the messenger Allah sent to mankind. Through him we received the Qur'an, the example, the way of life.
Saying both halves is the shahadah.
- 04
Memorise it
The full shahadah is one of the shortest things you will ever memorise. Repeat it through the day for a few days — at red lights, before sleeping, after wudu — and it will live in you.
It is also recited inside salah, in the tashahhud.
- 05
Carry it daily
The shahadah is not a one-time act. Every prayer, every act of worship, every small act of remembrance pulls you back to it.
When in doubt, when overwhelmed, when grateful — return to it. There is no god but Allah.
Just so you know
If you took shahadah today
Alhamdulillah. Your past is wiped clean — every previous wrong is forgiven by this single act.
What comes next is gentle. Wudu, then a first prayer, then a first surah of the Qur'an. Take them one at a time.
